DESCRIPTION
Standard 8: Assessment
The teacher understands and uses formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social, and physical development of the learner.
REFLECTION
Assessments are critical in the classroom to assess students understanding and comprehension of the science curriculum. Assessments can look very different from one another and take on many forms. Assessments can be categorized as either summative (formal) or formative (informal). The assessment information is used for two purposes: 1) to analyze the teacher’s effectiveness, and 2) to analyze the student’s comprehension and abilities.
In addition to formative and summative assessments, I believe it is important for teacher to use authentic assessments. Authentic assessments measure not only the student’s ability to effectively demonstrate skills or solve problems but also his or her ability to assume responsibility for directing his or her own learning.
Types of assessments can include but are not limited to; learning logs, journals, tests, quizzes, observations, peer evaluations and homework.
