Standard 1: Content Pedagogy

DESCRIPTION

Standard 1: Content Pedagogy

The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline he or she teaches and can create learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for students.

REFLECTION

In order to be an effective teacher, it is important to have knowledge of the content one is to teach.  This is the foundation for a teacher, but a teacher must have more than a simple understanding of the content.  Teachers of science must understand and can articulate the knowledge and practices of contemporary science.  They can interpret important concepts, ideas, theories, applications and conduct scientific investigations. It is critical that the teacher evaluates resources and curriculum materials for their comprehensiveness, accuracy and usefulness for representing science concepts and ideas. Science content knowledge is essential for the selection and evaluation of curriculum and materials used in the classroom.
